The experience
Tivoli sits in the hills about thirty kilometres from Rome and holds two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Our concierge arranges the transport and a guide for the day. At Hadrian's Villa, the emperor's vast second-century retreat, you walk among pools, colonnades and the long reflecting water of the Canopus. After lunch in town, Villa d'Este offers a very different mood: terraced Renaissance gardens where hundreds of fountains, from the Avenue of the Hundred Fountains to the Fountain of the Organ, fill the air with the sound of water. It is a full, gentle day out of the city, at its best in spring and early autumn when the gardens are green.
