Catacombs and the Appian Way
Follow Rome's oldest consular road to the early Christian catacombs, among umbrella pines and ancient tombs.
Leave the centre behind for the Via Appia Antica, the road begun in 312 BC that once led to the south of Italy. Our concierge arranges a guide and, on request, a private transfer, so the morning flows easily from the old city gates to the green stretch of the Appian Way Regional Park. You visit one of the great catacombs along the road, such as San Callisto or San Sebastiano, where long underground galleries hold early Christian tombs and frescoes. Above ground, the walk continues past Roman tombs and paving stones worn by two thousand years of travellers. It is a quieter, slower side of Rome, and an easy one to pair with a long lunch in the countryside.
