The experience
Within a few minutes' walk of the Pantheon, some of Rome's greatest paintings hang not in museums but in working churches. With a guide arranged by our concierge, you begin inside the Pantheon, where the unreinforced concrete dome and its open oculus have drawn visitors for nearly two thousand years. From there the walk threads through the lanes of the historic centre to San Luigi dei Francesi, home to Caravaggio's cycle of St Matthew, and on to Sant'Agostino and Santa Maria sopra Minerva, with Bernini's elephant waiting in the piazza outside. It is a short route with much to see, well suited to a morning or a late afternoon.
